Lunch & Learns with BVNS

BVNS is now providing virtual lunch & learn sessions! Let us share some neurology “food for thought” with your practice. We have several talks available and can present to your entire staff or specific members of your staff. Topics and descriptions are  listed below. If you are interested in a lunch & learn, please complete the form found at the bottom of the page.

Neurological Exam Demonstration

When we see a case at BVNS, we wish to do the following: collect the owner’s observations (history taking) and perform a thorough neurological exam that will help us define the location of the abnormality. Once the lesion location is matched with the history, we can provide the most likely causes for the symptoms or complaints. We can then discuss possible treatments including further diagnostics, and prognosis. The value of testing to separate out the possible causes and to direct therapy then becomes clear. In this session, we will provide tips on achieving better lesion localization and discuss the overall neurologic exam.

Seizure Presentation

When we see a patient for a seizure evaluation at BVNS, we ask 3 questions – Is the event a seizure? Is there a definable and specifically treatable underlying cause (rather than just treating the symptom)? Which seizure medication might be the best in this situation? During this talk, we will discuss the importance of these three questions in determining the best treatment options for a patient who has experienced a seizure. We will also discuss how to differentiate types of seizure and the use of advanced diagnostics to further direct treatment.

Vestibular Disease and the Treatment of GME

Diseases of the balance system are common, and in some situations, the prognosis is excellent and does not require treatment. In others, the situation is truly emergent and prompt treatment can be life-saving. How can we tell the difference? This talk will discuss these two situations, how we can distinguish between them and how to best advise clients on the correct course of action.

Spinal Cord Disease

Spinal cord disease that is manifested as weakness, ataxia and/or pain is common in veterinary medicine. Disk disease is the most common cause of spinal cord disease but certainly not the only cause. This discussion will involve how to recognize spinal cord disease during an exam, the best choices for spinal cord imaging and current treatments for spinal cord disease.
