Neurobites – Cerebral white matter in dogs

Every week, the BVNS neurologists, residents and interns convene to discuss a human or veterinary neurology/neurosurgery article.

NeuroBites is a digestible synopsis written by Dr. Bush of the article covered in journal club.

Welcome to NeuroBites.

What is this picture?
This is a picture of the white matter tracts of the brain recorded using Diffusion Tensor Tractography.

Great, What is Diffusion Tensor Tractography?
Diffusion – the movement of water

Tractography – imaging of water movement along a white matter tract

Tract – a group of neuron’s projections that have a similar function. For example, a white matter tract might carry information from the eye to the cerebral cortex and without it then you would be functionally blind.

What is the benefit – why does it matter?
This technology will improve our ability to identify disease in the white matter of the brain – think of all those dogs with brain disease that currently have a normal MRI.

Secondly it will allow us to really refine our treatment both surgically and medically for brain disease – think of a specific approach or even staged approach for removing a brain tumor and choosing a pathway that does not leave the patient functionally blind.
