Lydia is a 10 year old FS Border Collie Mix that we met in July for a sudden onset of weakness affecting her right side causing an inability for her to stand or walk. She was referred to us by Academy Animal Hospital in Baltimore MD. Dr. Lipitz and the BVNS staff performed a cervical MRI examination and diagnosed a type of disc herniation called an acute cervical compressive hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion. This means that hydrated/gelatinous disc material herniated. In general with this type of disc herniation, many dogs can recover with medical management alone, given the soft nature of this gelatinous material which can dissipate on its own. We rechecked Lydia ~10 days into her medical management treatment plan and she has made wonderful improvements. She has regained the ability to stand and walk unassisted; she is not yet neurologically normal but we hope this will be the case soon in the coming weeks. We plan to see Lydia back next month for a final recheck examination to ensure her wonderful progress continues.
