Intranasal Midazolam Kit

Contents

• Glass vial with midazolam suspension in a light protected container
• Syringes with hypodermic needles
• MAD device

Directions: Following a seizure, follow the steps below:

  1. Take the syringe, ensure the needle is screwed on tightly, remove the cap, and insert it into an inverted glass vial containing Midazolam solution.
  2. Draw up the appropriate amount of Midazolam as directed by the Veterinarian.
  3. Use the one-handed method to safely re-cap the syringe.
  4. Carefully unscrew the capped needle off of the syringe.
  5. Screw the MAD device onto the syringe tip.
  6. Tilt your pet’s head back and rest the cone of the MAD device in one nostril.
  7. Slowly drip the contents of the syringe into the nostril by gently pressing down on the plunger.
  8. This can be repeated after two or more seizures (3 total per 24 hours) but wait at least 10 minutes between doses to avoid excessive sedation. After the third does, if your pet has another seizure, please bring him or her to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital for further treatment.

What to Expect

Your pet may experience some side effects after receiving Midazolam. Side effects may include sedation, delirium, incoordination, increased hunger (sometimes for non-food items) and vocalization for up to several hours after administration.
