Neurobites – January 12 – Seizure Management Plan

Welcome to Neurobites. Each week we feature a useful veterinary neurology tip for our referral community, created by one of our board-certified neurologists.

Watch Dr. Sarah Trub (BVNS Richmond) give a quick tip about developing a seizure management plan for your patients. A transcript for this video can be found below:

“Hello, my name is Sarah Trub, and I’m a neurologist with our Richmond, Virginia office, here to give you a neurology tip for the day.

Owners with seizure pets can be so frustrated and hopeless in terms of what to do when their pet has a seizure at home. That’s why it’s so important that we give them a plan on how they can act when their pet has a seizure. Part of that plan is going to be giving additional anti-seizure medications at home following a seizure, to try to minimize the chance that that pet is going to get into an emergency situation.

To do so, you can use additional doses of their maintenance seizure medication, that’s often the very easiest thing, or you can give them an additional medication to be used at home as well. That could be an additional oral medication that they use temporarily, or that can be an intranasal form of midazolam, for example. Hope that’s helpful!”
