missyMissy was referred to BVNS Rockville by Dr. Phillips of CARE Veterinary Center after having 10 seizures in 12 hours.  Missy was in a coma at presentation and EEG showed a very serious condition called burst suppression and also electrical seizure. Incredibly, despite looking like she was asleep, the EEG showed she was having dangerous electrical events in the brain called seizure.

MRI diagnosed an ear infection that had ruptured into the brain and we knew that starting antibiotics could reverse the condition. Missy’s owner was informed the prognosis was guarded but there was a chance, especially if we used the EEG to define the correct seizure medication dose.  Missy was then treated with high doses of phenobarbital until the EEG improved  and the dose could be safely reduced.

Happily, 5 days after presenting in a coma, Missy is eating and will be ready to go home tomorrow. This approach to seizure management is unique to BVNS and has been reported on in the Journal of American Veterinary Medicine with a similar case called Squirrel. We are thrilled to be able to have this EEG capacity and save lives – obviously Missy’s owner is pretty happy too.
