This past Sunday, the BVNS Neurologists got together to learn from each other and to practice a procedure called lateral corpectomy which offers hope to a previously very difficult to treat population of dogs.
The problem:
Many German Shepherds (and many other breeds – especially pugs) develop progressive weakness, pain and incontinence secondary to long standing and progressive pressure on the spinal cord from a bulging disk – up until recently this condition was hopeless and irreversible.
BVNS’ Solution:
Work on a novel surgical procedure to safely and permanently reverse this disease.
Also important is the fact that many German Shepherds are often misdiagnosed with an incurable disease called degenerative myelopathy – however MRI often shows the cause of the progressive weakness to be chronic disk disease – and now we have a useful surgical solution for this disease.
BVNS and our partner company, Bush Advanced Veterinary Imaging, have teamed up to tackle a big problem in a large population of dogs.
