This sweet girl is Sicily. Sicily’s owners adopted her in January and noticed that she was very sensitive to anyone touching her back. After a couple of months on pain medication, Sicily lost the ability to use her hind limbs. She was referred to us from All Pets Emergency and Referral Center.
Dr. Akin performed a neurologic exam and suspected intervertebral disc disease. An MRI was performed and showed evidence of a disc extrusion at T13-L1 causing moderate spinal cord compression. Immediately following her MRI she was transferred to surgery where a hemilaminectomy was performed. After one night in the hospital, Sicily was much more comfortable and went home later that afternoon.
This is Sicily at her 6-week post-op recheck appointment. She is walking normally and is pain free! Her demeanor has completely changed, and she is such a sweet girl! We love you Sicily and wish you the best in your recovery!
